Visit of an Astronaut – Nicole Stott

DR. VIRGINIA PARRAS
President & CEO

Although we are faced with many challenges due to the COVID-19 virus, we have used this time to create new opportunities for learning. This is our week for intense focus on science at DeBakey and we were able to overcome the restrictions the pandemic created by partnering with the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. Through this wonderful new relationship, they managed to create an online presentation by Astronaut/Aquanaut Nicole Stott, who is the first artist to ever paint in space.

Astronaut Stott provided individual online interactive sessions for all our students at each of our grade levels and for special guests who also joined in. Students, school Board members, and special guests from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education were able to participate in a unique Q&A with Astronaut Stott. She shared her unique journey on how she became an astronaut, her experiences in space and living under water. Prior to doing a spacewalk three times, Astronaut Stott was a member of the NASA engineering team. She inspired students to focus on STEAM education and highlighted how each section of the STEAM education helped her get to where she is now.

Students from grades 5 through 8 prepared their interpretation of one of her watercolor paintings from space and used their paintings in a collogue style painting to thank her on behalf of the school. We were thankful to have participants from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education who included His Excellency Mr. Omar Al-Naama, Assistant Undersecretary for Private Schools, Her Excellency Ms. Fawziya Al-Khater, Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Affairs, and Ms. Rawda Al-Zaidan, Director of Private Schools Affairs Department at the ministry. DeBakey continues to follow in the footsteps of the doctor, innovator, researcher, and scientist Dr. Micheal E. DeBakey to ensure we provide outstanding educational support and academic excellence for the success of our students.
