Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions – Qatar has declared October 14 to October 17 “Heart Education Week.” The high school has collaborated with Houston, Texas Methodist Hospital’s DeBakey Institute for Cardiovascular Education (DICET) to host the first-ever live broadcast of open-heart surgery to a high school. Throughout the week the students at DeBakey High School – Qatar will study the diseases that affect the human heart, surgical procedures as a result of heart complications, and the cutting-edge technology used in various heart procedures.  A live broadcast of an open heart surgery will be held at the school on October 16th at 5 p.m. Doha time. The patient under operation will receive a heart valve replacement and corrective cardiovascular surgery.

The broadcast event will include about 100 DeBakey students, parents, faculty, staff, and board members. In addition, the school has invited 150 guests from local universities, colleges, and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. DeBakey High School in Houston, Texas is also invited to simultaneously view the surgery.

The surgeon, Dr. Mahesh Ramchandani, will narrate the procedures as he performs the operation. During the operation, the heart will be stopped, and the patient will be connected to an artificial heart machine while the valve is replaced, and corrective surgery is performed. Each high school has prepared several questions that will be asked at the conclusion of the surgery, which will be answered and discussed by Dr. Ramchandani.

This experience is the first of its kind for any high school and was developed by Dr. Virginia Parras, President, and CEO of Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions – Qatar in collaboration with Dr. Alan Lumsden and Mr. Stephen Igo of DICET – Houston. Dr. Parras was inspired to create this opportunity for her students by the Emir’s vision 2030 for innovative leadership in education and health science, to help students become leaders in the fields of medicine, technology, and engineering.
